Caroline Eidson's experience is shared through her engaging and strategic presentations. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She has been an instructor at the University of Virginia and at Duke University. She is a highly sought after speaker at many seminars throughout the country on Differentiating Instruction. Caroline is also the author of many publications and authored the book, Differentiation in Practice: A resource guide for differentiating curriculum.
Session 1 - Differentiated Instruction Overview – Participants in this session will learn the vocabulary of differentiated instruction (content, process, product, readiness, interest, learning profile, flexible grouping) and discuss the driving principles behind differentiated instruction.
Session 2 - Communication and Management -
Participants in this session will discuss ways to communicate with students, parents, administrators, and/or other teachers the rationale and principles behind Differentiated Instruction. Teachers will identify classroom management techniques and tools that will enable them to successfully apply differentiation in their classrooms.
Session 3 - Identifying, Creating, and Selecting Objectives -
Participants in this session will distinguish between objectives identifying what students should know, understand, and be able to do. Teachers will develop objectives based on curricula and will identify objectives that are best suited for differentiation.
Session 4 - Assessment -
Participants in this session will examine a variety of assessments and discuss their use during the course of a differentiated unit of study. Teachers will create unit pre-assessments and analyze their results. The role of grading in a differentiated classroom will be discussed.
Session 5 - Tiered Assignments: Part I -
Participants in this session will examine examples of tiered assignments and will identify the steps in creating them. Teachers will discuss the characteristics of well-designed tiered assignments and evaluate examples available on the Internet.
Session 6 - Tiered Assignments: Part 2 - Participants in this session will apply the information learned in the previous session, as well as the steps in creating tiered assignments, to create tiered assignments and activities. Teachers will evaluate their own tiered assignments using the criteria discussed.
Session 7 - Multiple Intelligences - Participants in this session will examine Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences and discuss its effective application in the classroom. Teachers will discuss examples of tasks that are based on MI.
Session 8 - RAFT Assignments and Complex Instruction -
Participants in this session will examine a variety of RAFT assignments and Complex Instruction tasks and will learn how to create and use their own that are focused on the needs of their students.
Session 9 - Comparing Classrooms and Setting Goals - Participants in the session will examine the differences between differentiated and non-differentiated classrooms and will set goals for their continued growth in the area of differentiated instruction.
