Total Lunar Eclipse with Maria Interlandi

The Lunar ECLIPSE Passport: Adventure in Learning hosted by Maria, will show students video footage of the lunar eclipse and explain exactly what happens in space through the use of pictures and diagrams.

A total lunar eclipse will occur and be visible in North America on August 28 th, 2007. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the phenomenon with your students.

After February 21 st, 2007, our students will not have the opportunity to experience a total lunar eclipse again until 2010.

An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
