Students will be transported to the western coast of Africa as they learn a welcome dance from Liberia and a social dance from Ghana. Fanga is a popular dance used to welcome visitors. This very easy and fun dance holds a lot of significance in the history of dance in America. Fanga was the first African dance taught widely to U.S. dancers in the early 1960's. Performed by many African dance companies here and abroad, it is a great introduction the art of West African movement. Kpanlogo is a social dance from Ghana which is used to tell a story. Dancers relate commentary about mothers, village leaders, and African society in general through descriptive dance steps. Both dances feature songs that can be taught and sung in the traditional African call and response style.
